The Miniaturist

The Miniaturist

Jessie Burton

Set in Amsterdam in the late 1600s, this expansive novel has magic and history, illicit affairs and complicated relationships. The story follows young Nella as she arrives in the big city as a young bride to a wealthy but mysterious merchant. He gives her a gift of a miniature replication of the house she now calls home. She loves the gift but then mysterious events begin to happen all around her. Also, she just can't seem to please her new family at all. Both brother and sister are very standoffish. Eventually, the reason behind her new husband's cold demeanor slowly comes to light after so many twists and turns. Burton expertly unravels each mystery right before your eyes. A book that I couldn't put down and one that will haunt me for a while.
