My Salinger Year

My Salinger Year

Joanna Rakoff

Looking at my nonfiction bookshelf I can see several books on Salinger. Books on him as a person and on his books separately. Reading Salinger is like a religion to me. I love his work deeply. And frankly I will read anything on him. Evoking his name will make me pick up just about anything. I even own "How to Teach Salinger's NINE STORIES" even though I am not a teacher now nor do I ever plan on being one. Obviously I picked up this book. It's wonderful. Rakoff had never read Salinger before taking on a job at the very prestigious literary agency she landed in the mid-90s. But she was inspired after being tasked with responding to some of his fan mail. She is now one of us, picking up a Salinger book every year to reread. She was moved to tears just as the rest of us; realizing that these books and stories are less about people and more about life. Fans of both Salinger but also of memoir will thoroughly enjoy this book.
