Bats of the Republic: An Illuminated Novel
Zachary Thomas Dodson
When I first picked this book up I thought the interest would come from the funky packaging. This is one of those books with extra "stuff" like a letter sealed in an envelope at the conclusion of the book. However, Dodson has created a beautiful object while also telling an interesting, engaging story. It ranges from mid-1800s to far into the future, introducing you to a wide variety of characters. I don't want to give too much away but I will say the mystery is very well done and kept me guessing. Also, Dodson carefully crafts each one of the characters, giving them such full backstories that you feel a real connection to them. I could not stop reading and never felt lost in the experimental parts of this novel. At its core, a love story, but it's so much more!
