As with Lerner's first novel I almost hate myself for loving it so damn much. His narrators are middle class white guys dealing with issues I could never relate to and yet, I love his books. This newest one deals with two friends trying to decide whether to undergo IVF and have a baby even though they aren't in a romantic relationship. It's further complicated by past feelings and current relationships. The idea is wrestled with by a story within the story much like another of my favorite white guys, Philip Roth's The Counterlife. Always brilliantly plotted and written in lyrical verse that reminds you that Lerner was a poet first, 10:04 is sharp and fun. I look forward to Ben Lerner's next book about a white dude.
